Hello!
I hope you are well and looking forward to the weekend.
Today we are going to look at three words which are spelt differently, have
different meanings, but are pronounced the same, i.e., they are homophones.
These words are “two”, “to” and “too”.
Hoje vamos estudar três palavras que se escrevem de maneira diferente,
têm significados diferentes, mas se pronunciam igual, isto é, são
homófonas: “two”, “to” y “too”.
Let’s start by looking at the easiest of
these three words: “two”.
“two” (2) is a number. For example,
He has two flatmates. I have two sisters.
(Ele) Tem dois companheiros de apartamento. Tenho duas irmãs.
“to” is used to indicate purpose, as in the following examples:
I went home during my lunch break to have a nap.
Fui para casa durante a hora do almoço para tirar um cochilo.
He is training every day to win
the competition.
Ele treina todos os dias para ganhar a
competição.
Here the “to” is followed by a verb.
“to” is also used as a preposition expressing motion in the direction of (a
particular location), for example:
Yesterday I went to the supermarket.
Ontem fui ao supermercado.
My parents went to Malta on holiday last year.
Meus pais foram de férias a Malta o ano passado.
“to” also has lots of other uses which
you will discover as you study English.
The final word we are going to look at today is “too”.
“too” is usually used at the end of a sentence or clause and means “in
addition” or “also”.
I love Chinese food and I love Spanish food too.
Adoro comida chinesa e espanhola também.
Brad Pitt isn’t just good-looking; he’s a very good actor too.
O Brad Pitt não é apenas bonito, também é um ator muito bom.
“too” is sometimes used before an
adjective or adverb and in this case it means “more than what is wanted,
needed, acceptable, possible, etc.”
I am too hot. He drove too fast and
caused an accident.
Tenho muito calor. (Ele) Dirigiu muito rápido e provocou um
acidente.

other confusing English words, check out our blog.
Have a lovely weekend. You now have two days todo
what you want ? Don’t forget to study some English too!
Take care,
