How to tell the time

Today we are going to look at telling the time in English so that the next time someone stops you and asks you the time, you will feel confident enough to tell them.
Hoje vamos estudar as horas em inglês, assim da próxima vez que alguém parar você na rua e lhe perguntar a hora, você terá a confiança para lhe responder.

There are two common ways of telling the time.
Há duas maneiras muito comuns de dizer a hora.

One way which is common in Britain is to say the minutes first and then the hour. For minutes 1 to 30 we use past but for minutes 31 to 59 we use to.
Uma forma muito comum no inglês britânico é dizer os minutos primeiro e depois a hora. Do minuto 1 ao 30 se usa "past", mas dos minutos 31 a 59 usamos "to".

For example,

9:10 (ten past nine)
9:10 (as nove e dez)

10:25 (twenty-five past ten)
10:25 (as dez e vinte e cinco)

11:40 (twenty to twelve)
11:40 (vinte para as doze)

But...

instead of saying “15 minutes past”, say (a) quarter past

instead of saying “15 minutes to”, say (a) quarter to

instead of saying “30 minutes past”, say half past

For example,

10:15 = (a) quarter past ten
10:15 = as dez e quinze/um quarto

9:45 = (a) quarter to ten
9:45 = quinze/um quarto para as dez

11:30 = half past eleven
11:30 = as onze e meia

Another important rule is when the clock hands are on the hour we sayo’clock in English.
Outra regra importante é que quando é uma hora em ponto, dizemos "o' clock" em inglês.

For example:

12:00 (twelve o'clock)

13:00 (one o’clock)

Another way of telling the time which is more common in the USA which is easier for many people is to say the hour first and the minutes after, for example,
Nos Estados Unidos, há uma maneira mais fácil de dizer a hora, com a hora primeiro e os minutos depois, por exemplo,

14:30 (two thirty)

18:26 (six twenty-six)

9:50 (nine fifty)

Remember that in the morning before 12:00 we always refer to the time as a.m. but after 12:00 we refer to the time as p.m.
Lembre-se que até 12:00 da manhã, dizemos "a.m.", mas após essa hora, é "p.m.".

3 a.m. (three in the morning)
03:00 (as três da manhã)

3 p.m. (three in the afternoon)
15:00 (as três da tarde)
