How to Use the Present Simple

For today’s fun English tip we are going to look at the present simple in English. I’ll show you exactly when and how to use it correctly. Are you ready?Para a dica de inglês de hoje vamos rever o presente simples. Vou te mostrar quando e como usá-lo corretamente. Pronto(a)?

Right, let’s start by looking at the following conversation between Robert (R) and Maria (M):Bem, vamos começar examinando a seguinte conversa entre o Robert (R) e a Maria (M):
R: The plane leaves for Barcelona at six tomorrow morning so I need to have an early night.
O avião sai para Barcelona amanhã às seis da manhã, por isso eu preciso ir para a cama cedo.

M: I know. You brother lives there doesn’t he?
Pois é. Seu irmão mora lá, certo?

R: Yes he lives there too and so does my sister. I miss them a lot. I call them every weekend for a chat and now I can finally visit them.
Sim, ele também mora lá, assim como minha irmã. Eu sinto muito falta deles. Ligo para eles todos os fins de semana para falar um pouco e agora posso finalmente ir visitá-los.

M: Well, have a great time then! I leave for my holiday on Monday too so I’ll see you when you get back.
Divirta-se muito então! Também vou de férias na segunda-feira, a gente se vê quando você voltar.

Firstly, we use the present simple for something that is always true. Look at the following example from the text above:Primeiro, usamos o presente simples para falar sobre algo que é sempre verdade. Veja este exemplo do texto acima:
- Your brother lives there too, doesn’t he?
- Seu irmão também mora lá, certo?

(In this conversation we can see that at the present moment Robert’s brother and sister live in Barcelona.)(Nesta conversa podemos ver que neste momento o irmão e a irmã de Robert estão morando em Barcelona).

Remember that with the present simple we place an “s” at the end of verbs in the third person singular. “Do” becomes “does” in the third person singular present form.Lembre-se que com o presente simples colocamos um "s" no final do verbo na terceira pessoa do singular. “Do” se torna "does" na terceira pessoa do singular.

Secondly, we use the present simple for things that happen repeatedlyand normally we use the adverbs “often”, “always”, “every day”, “sometimes”, etc, with the present simple. For example:Em segundo lugar, usamos o presente simples para as coisas que acontecem repetidamente, e nesses casos normalmente usamos os advérbios “often”, “always”, “every day”, “sometimes”, etc.
- I call them every weekend for a chat.
- Ligo para eles todos os fins de semana para falar um pouco.

Lastly, it can be used for something that is fixed or based on a schedule. For example:Finalmente, pode ser usado para falar de algo já definido ou baseado em um horário. Por exemplo:
- The plane leaves for Barcelona at six tomorrow morning.
- O avião sai para Barcelona amanhã às seis da manhã
