Question Tags with "Do"

Today we are going to look at question tags with the auxiliary verb “to do” in English. Remember that we use question tags in English when we want confirmation that something we believe is correct is indeed correct.Hoje vamos estudar "question tags" com o verbo auxiliar "to do" em inglês. Lembre-se que usamos "question tags" em inglês quando queremos que alguém nos confirme algo que acreditamos ser correto.

If the first part of the sentence is in the present simple affirmative, it is nearly always followed by a negative question tag using “don’t” or “doesn’t”. Exceptions are the verb “to be” and modal verbs.Se a primeira parte da frase estiver no presente simples e na afirmativa, quase sempre vai seguida de uma "question tag" na negativa, usando "don't" ou "doesn't". As exceções são os verbos modais e o verbo "to be".

Look at some examples:

- You like John, don’t you?- Você gosta de John, certo?
- Yes, I do.-Sim, gosto.

- We leave for Paris on Monday, don’t we?- Vamos a Paris na segunda-feira, não vamos?
- No, we don’t. We leave for Paris on Tuesday!- Não, não é assim. Nós vamos para Paris na terça-feira!

- She likes pasta, doesn’t she?- Ela gosta de massa, não gosta?
- I think so!- Acho que sim!

A negative statement is followed by an affirmative “question tag” with the auxiliary verbs “do” or “does”.Uma frase negativa vai seguida por uma "question tag" afirmativa com os verbos auxiliares "do" ou "does".

For example:

- They don’t have many friends in their new school, do they?- Eles não têm muitos amigos na sua nova escola, têm?
- No they don’t, but I’m sure they will soon meet people.- Não, não têm, mas tenho certeza que eles conhecerão gente em breve.

- Mike doesn’t have much work left, does he?- O Mike já não tem muito trabalho, certo?
- No, he has nearly finished.- Não, o tem quase terminado

- You play the guitar, don’t you?- Você toca a guitarra, não toca?
- Yes, I do. I also play the piano.- Toco, sim. Também toco piano.

When a statement contains a word with a negative meaning, the question tag needs to be positive. Quando uma frase contém uma palavra com um significado negativo, a "question tag" deve ser positiva.

For example,

- She hardly ever speaks to him, does she?- Ela quase nunca fala com ele, fala?

- They rarely eat out, do they?- Eles raramente comem fora, não é?
