"There is" and "there are"

Beginners

Today’s English grammar tip will be there is (singular) and there are (plural). We use “there is” and “there are” to say that something exists. Let’s see how to use and form them by looking at the examples below.Hoje, vamos ver como usar ”there is” e “there are”. Ambos se traduzem por "há", mas “there is” é singular e “there are” é plural.

Positive Sentences

There is a car in the garage.Há um carro na garagem.

There are three chairs in the classroom.Há três cadeiras na aula.

There is a book on the table.Há um livro na mesa.

There are five kittens in the basket.Há cinco gatinhos na cesta.

We normally use “there is” with contractions. For example:Normalmente usamos a contração "there's" em lugar de "there is". Por exemplo:

There’s a car in the garage.

There’s a book on the table.

We cannot use contractions with “there are”."There are" não pode ser contraído.

Negative Sentences

The negative is formed by putting not after “is” or “are”. Here are some examples:Criamos a forma negativa colocando "not" depois do verbo. Aqui estão alguns exemplos:

There is not a horse in the field.Não há um cavalo no campo.

There are not eight children in the dining room.Não há oito crianças na sala de jantar.

There is not a tree in the garden.Não há uma árvore no jardim.

There are not two elephants in the zoo.Não há dois elefantes no zoológico.

Negative contractions are:

There is not = There’s not / There isn’t

There are not = There aren’t

Questions

To form questions we put “is” or “are” in front of “there”. For example,Para formar perguntas, colocamos "is" ou "are" diante de "there". Por exemplo:

Is there a person in the house?Há uma pessoa na casa?

Are there any oranges in the fruit bowl?Há alguma laranja na fruteira?

Is there any sugar in this cake?Há açúcar neste bolo?

Are there any kids in the park?Há crianças no parque?
