| Can you speak English? Can I help make it easier for you? The questions I am asking are formed by using the modal verb “can.” It is a very important modal verb that is used all the time so I am going to show you how and when to use it correctly. Você fala inglês? Posso ajudá-lo a que seja mais fácil para você? Estas perguntas que eu estou fazendo são formadas em inglês com o verbo modal "can". Let’s go! can is used for the following:"Can" se usa nos seguintes casos: - to talk about possibility or abilitypara falar de possibilidades ou capacidades - to ask or give permissionpara pedir ou dar permissão - to make requests.para pedir coisas To talk about ability or possibility, “can” is usually placed before the action verb. For example:Para falar de capacidades ou possibilidades, "can" geralmente vai colocado antes do verbo de ação. Por exemplo: • James is a good sportsman. He can play tennis, football and cricket very well. (ability)James é um bom esportista. Ele sabe jogar tênis, futebol e críquete muito bem. (capacidade) • Cathy can come to the party because she finishes work at 6. (possibility)Cathy pode vir à festa, porque trabalha até as 6. (possibilidade) To form questions asking for permission, “can” is placed at the beginning of the sentence.Para formar perguntas pedindo permissão, "can" é colocado no início da frase. To give permission, “can” is placed after the subject.Para dar permissão, "can" é colocado após o sujeito. • Can I go to Lucy’s party on Saturday night?Posso ir à festa de Lucia no sábado à noite? • Can I smoke in this room?Posso fumar nesta sala? • You can take my car to work if yours isn’t working. To form questions making requests, “can” is placed at the beginning of the sentence.Para formar perguntas, pedindo algo, "can" se coloca no início da frase. Look at some examples: • Can I have a coffee please?Você poderia me trazer um café, por favor? • Can you please help me paint my house this afternoon?Você pode me ajudar a pintar a minha casa esta tarde, por favor? • Can you give me a lift to work?Você pode me levar para o trabalho? For negatives we use “cannot” or the contraction “can’t”, for example: • You can’t arrive late because it’s an important day.Você não pode chegar atrasado porque é um dia importante • The boys can’t go out tonight as they have not finished their homework.Os garotos não podem sair esta noite, pois não terminaram seus deveres. • He cannot play in the match as he is injured.
