| In today’s lesson we are going to look at the verb “to be” in the past and how it is used in questions and answers.Tudo bem? Na lição de hoje vamos estudar o verbo "to be" no passado e como usá-lo em perguntas e respostas. Let’s look at a dialogue between a mum (M) and her son (S) about their days.Eis um diálogo entre uma mãe (M) e seu filho (S) sobre como foi o dia. M: How was your day at school?Como foi seu dia na escola? S: Fine thanks, Mum. Was your day good?Bem, obrigado mãe. Seu dia foi bom? M: Yes, it was. I went shopping and had a coffee with my friend Susan.Foi sim. Fui às compras e tomei um café com minha amiga Susan. S: Wasn’t she supposed to come round for dinner tonight?Não estava combinado que ela viria jantar esta noite? M: Yes, she was but she had to cancel because she is not feeling well.Were you busy at school today? Sim, mas ela teve que cancelar, porque não está se sentindo muito bem. Here are some of the important rules to remember when using “was” or “were” in the past simple:Aqui tem algumas das regras mais importantes que você deve lembrar na hora de usar “was” ou “where” no passado simples: • To form questions we change the position of “was” or “were” and the subject around, for example:Para formar perguntas trocamos a posição de “was” ou “were” com a do sujeito, por exemplo: Were you busy at school today? • With questions containing the question words “which”, “when”, “where”, “why”, “how”, etc, “was” or “were” just follow the question word. For example:Com perguntas que contêm os pronomes interrogativos “which”, “when”, “where”, “why”, “how”, etc., “was” ou “were” vai logo após o pronome. Por exemplo: How was your day at school? • “Was” or “were” may be used in short answers. For example, the possible short answers to the question “Were all your friends there today too?” are: “Was” e “were” podem ser usados com respostas curtas.
