Our quick English tip for today is going to be related to the quantifiers “some” and “any”.The words “some” and “any” are used when a speaker cannot or does not specify amounts or numbers of things or people. Nossa dica de inglês de hoje está relacionada com os quantificadores "some" e "any". As palavras "some" e "any" se usam quando o falante não pode especificar ou simplesmente não especifica as quantidades de coisas ou pessoas.

Have a look at the following sentences:

- While driving to school yesterday, we saw three kids playing in the park.
Ontem enquanto íamos no carro para a escola, vimos três crianças brincando no parque.

In this sentence the number of children is specified and it is important to know how many kids the speaker saw.Em esta frase se especifica o número de crianças e é importante saber quantas crianças viu o falante.

- While driving to school yesterday, we saw some kids playing in the park.
Ontem enquanto íamos no carro para a escola, vimos algumas crianças brincando no parque.

In this sentence the speaker is unsure of how many children were playing in the park or the number is unimportant.
Em esta frase, o falante não tem certeza de quantas crianças estavam brincando no parque, ou considerou que o número não era importante.

some is normally used in affirmative sentences. For example:

- Some people are coming to the party but I don’t know how many.
Algumas pessoas vêm para a festa, mas não sei quantas.

- If I have some free time after work, I will come visit you.
Se eu tiver algum tempo livre depois do trabalho, virei te visitar.

any is normally used in negative sentences. For example:

- The company still hasn’t got any news about the merger.
A empresa não tem ainda nenhuma notícia sobre a fusão.

- I didn’t see any of my friends at the party.
Não vi nenhum dos meus amigos na festa.

In the following dialogue between Chris (C) and Marta (M) we can see how to use the quantifiers “some” and “any” in conversation.

C: Morning, Marta. Would you like to go get some coffee?
Bom dia, Marta. Gostaria de ir tomar um café?

M: Morning, Chris. No I don’t drink coffee any more. I stopped last month.
Bom dia, Chris. Eu já não bebo café. O deixei no mês passado.

C: That’s OK. Some friends of mine are at a coffee shop nearby so I thought I’d offer.
Não faz mal. Uns amigos meus estão em um café aqui perto, por isso eu convidei você.

M: I’d love to come but I have to study for next week’s test. I haven’t hadany time to study yet.
Gostaria de ir, mas tenho que estudar para o exame da próxima semana. Ainda não tive tempo para estudar.

Normally we use “any” to make questions to ask about the existence of something, for example,

- Is there any rice left?
Tem arroz?

- Do you have any children?Você tem filhos?

However, “some” can also be used when we are offering or suggesting something. Here are some examples:

- Would you like to go get some coffee?
Gostaria de ir tomar um café?

- Would you like some new shoes for your birthday?
Gostaria de um par de sapatos novos para o seu aniversário?

It may also be used when asking for something.

- Could I have some water please?
Poderia me trazer um pouco de água, por favor?

- Can I have some fries with my burger?Poderia me trazer um pouco de batata frita com o hambúrguer?
