Today we’re going to look at the modal verbs “must” and “mustn’t”.

As you probably already know, “must” expresses obligation and “mustn’t” expresses prohibition.

Look at some rules you might find on a piece of paper on the wall in a classroom where people are studying English.
Olhe para estas regras que poderiam se encontrar em uma folha de papel pendurada na parede de uma aula onde se estuda inglês.

You must listen to the teacher.
Você deve escutar o professor.

You must do your homework.
Você deve fazer seus deveres.

You must try to speak in English at all times.
Você deve tentar falar em inglês a todo momento.

You must follow the teacher’s instructions.
Você deve seguir as instruções do professor.

You mustn’t chew gum.
Você não deve mastigar chiclete.

You mustn’t shout.
Você não deve gritar.

You mustn’t speak when the teacher is speaking.
Você não deve falar quando o professor estiver falando.

You mustn’t run in the classroom.
Você não deve correr pela sala.

The most important rule when studying English in a classroom is “You must try to speak in English at all times”!

A good rule for online students is “You must try to write to your teacher in English at all times” ;)
Uma boa regra para os estudantes que estiverem fazendo cursos on-line de inglês é "Você deve tentar escrever a seu professor em inglês a todo momento" ;)

Remember the above rule next time you write to your teacher :)
Não esqueça a regra acima a próxima vez que você escreva a seu professor :)

I’m a very indecisive person and today I’m going to teach you how to express possibility in English ☺

Let’s start with the modal verbs “may” and “might”.

The modal verb “may” indicates possibility.

For example,

I may have pizza for dinner tonight.
Pode ser que jante pizza esta noite.

It may rain this weekend.
Pode ser que chova neste fim de semana.

Here you can use the modal verb “might” instead of “may” and say:

I might have pizza for dinner tonight.

It might rain this weekend.

Here “may” is slightly more formal than “might”.
Nestas frases, "may" é um pouco mais formal que "might".

We sometimes use the adverbs “maybe” and “perhaps” to express possibility. “Perhaps” is more formal than “maybe”.

When referring to possible future events like the ones in the examples above, we use these adverbs followed by the future with “will”.
Quando falamos de possíveis eventos futuros como os exemplos acima, estes advérbios são seguidos pelo futuro com "will".

Look…

Perhaps I will have pizza for dinner tonight.
or
Maybe I will have pizza for dinner tonight.
Talvez jantarei pizza esta noite.

Perhaps it will rain this weekend.
or
Maybe it will rain this weekend.
Talvez chova neste fim de semana.

Hopefully it won’t rain this weekend!
Espero que não chova neste fim de semana!

Today I want you to read a short text about music and the seasons to practice your reading skills. You can find definitions of the words in bold under the text.

There’s always a song suited to every season. When it’s summer or spring, we normally listen to upbeat happy songs. When it’s autumn or winter, we normally listen to calm relaxing music.

Whatever the season, we like to listen to nice catchy songs because they change our mood. No matter how bad, lonely or hard times are, music seems to do magic and helps us think and feel that at the end of the day, there’s always something good we need to be thankful for.

Vocabulary

suited: apropriado para

For example: I think the other applicant is better suited to the job.
Acho que o outro candidato é mais apto para este trabalho.

season: estação (do ano)

For example: My favourite season is summer.
Minha estação preferida é o verão.

summer: verão

For example: We always go to the beach in the summer.
Sempre vamos à praia no verão.

spring: primavera

For example: In spring, the flowers start to bloom.
Em primavera, as flores começam a florir.

autumn: outono

For example: Leaves change colour in autumn.
No outono as folhas mudam de cor.

winter: inverno

For example: Winter is my worst season. I hate the cold!
O inverno é a pior estação.. Odeio o frio!

upbeat: alegre, otimista

For example: She looked upbeat even though she was tired.
Ela tinha um ar alegre, embora estivesse cansada.

catchy: cativante

For example: Lady Gaga’s songs are always catchy.
As músicas de Lady Gaga sempre são contagiantes.

mood: humor

For example: He’s always in a bad mood on Monday mornings.
Ele sempre está de mal humor todas as segundas-feiras de manhã.

to seem: parecer

For example: You seem happy today.
Você parece feliz hoje.
